The King's Award for Voluntary Service

We are honoured and thrilled to receive the KAVS in respect of our wonderful volunteers who go above and beyond to provide the services of our Community Support Scheme. Announced on the King's birthday, 14th November 2023, the KAVS is the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK and is equivalent to an MBE.

Coronavirus (Covid-19) Update:

Throughout the pandemic our amazing staff continued to provide essential care services to older people and others in need. Although restrictions have now eased, our staff continue to use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment when with clients, and we continue to follow the latest guidance to keep everyone as safe as possible.

Welcome to the ASSIST TEIGNBRIDGE homepage

This charity is at the heart of the community in Dawlish, Devon, promoting volunteering and offering information, advice, help and assistance to elderly and vulnerable people in the locality through the Community Support Project.

The charity also provides a range of services across the whole of Teignbridge:-
a home care & sitting service to support individuals and enable carers to take a break;
a nail trimming service in people's homes or at a central venue in Dawlish; and
a home help service for those who struggle to manage household tasks.

We work with other charities in the locality and are supported by many local businesses. See the "Partners & Supporters" page for more information. Our work has also been recognised more widely - we were thrilled to be awarded the first Sir Eric Dancer Thriving Communities Award in 2014, and we are very proud to have been awarded a Quality Assurance Mark in 2018.

The Quality Assurance Mark is a designation of quality for voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations improving the health and wellbeing of people in the Teignbridge, Torbay and South Devon communities.

The picture on the left is from the presentation day at Old Forde House, with (l-r) Cllr. Tim Golder (Chairman of Teignbridge District Council), Lynn Cavill (Trustee - Open Daw), HM Deputy Lieutenant of Devon Robin Barlow, Shirley Fewings MBE (Manager - Assist Teignbridge) and Robin Buchanan (Chair of Trustees - Assist Teignbridge)

We have just launched the Assist Book & DVD Loan Club. We have a vast collection of books and DVDs that have been donated, and have decided to make them freely available for Members of the Charity (both individuals and organisations) to borrow. An information sheet is here. If you are not yet a Member of the Charity, and would like to be, please see the "Support Us" webpage for details.

In late 2016, Teignbridge CVS (Community & Voluntary Service) commissioned a video showcasing voluntary sector organisations that provide services to support health and wellbeing. A link to the video is here; our contribution, with footage from one of our Nail Clinics, is about 12 minutes in!

The charity's ninth AGM was held in July 2023, and was a celebration of how this charity has coped with ongoing challenges, and how vulnerable people in the community continue to be supported.
Those present heard from the Trustees, the Charity Manager and the Service Co-ordinators how our public benefit aims are being achieved in the community. The Annual Report 2022/23 is available here.

The Volunteer Centre

We offer support and advice to individuals considering volunteering, and recruit, interview and place volunteers within the local community or with other voluntary organisations.

We are always looking for volunteers to help with our projects; if you have some time to spare, we would love to hear from you! No special skills are required, just a willingness to help. Give a gift of your time and get so much more back. We can offer training and ongoing support, and travel expenses are paid.

Please click here for more information, or call the Volunteer Co-ordinator on 01626 888321.

Community Support Project

We offer information & advice, and signpost to relevant sources of support. Our work in the community also provides free support services to those in need. Delivered by volunteers, our services include befriending, help with gardening, dog walking, escorting, and benefits checks. Please click here for more information.

As part of our Benefits assistance for the over 65s, we are pleased to include links to the free online calculators provided by Turn2us and Age UK which enable anyone to check their eligibility for benefits. Not all benefits are means-tested; if you need assistance completing forms we have trained volunteers who can help.

The Home Care Service

We support Carers in the whole of the Teignbridge area by providing a sitting service, enabling Carers to have a much-needed break during the day or overnight.

We also provide practical help and personal care to individuals in their own homes, helping them to continue living independently for longer. Often people need short-term support after illness or a spell in hospital, or after having a fall.

The organisation is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for the provision of personal care and was inspected most recently in June 2018. It was found to be meeting CQC National Standards and its overall rating is "Good". The routine inspection programme was suspended in March 2020 due to the pandemic.
Using off-site monitoring since then, they have seen no reason to reassess their 2018 rating.

Our Care Staff are reliable and fully trained and will treat you or your cared-for with kindness, dignity and respect.

We are pleased to make available online our Statement of Purpose, which explains the services we can offer and provides summary information for clients. You can access this document by clicking here. Alternatively please call the Co-ordinators on 01626 889288 and request a paper copy.

The Nail Trimming Service

Do you have difficulty cutting your toenails? We are here to help. This home-visiting service to trim toenails was set up in 2009 under a Department of Health initiative. It was initially subsidised but we now need to cover all our costs. As a charity, we keep the fees as low as possible, with the charge currently set at just £21.

There are some restrictions on who can access the service, and other important information on the service webpage, for details click here or call the Co-ordinator on 01626 889288.

As an alternative to the home visit, with the support of Dawlish Town Council we previously offered a Nail Trimming Clinic at the Manor House, Dawlish every other month. It had to be paused while restrictions were in place and has not yet re-started.

Please Support Us!

We need volunteers to continue providing our services, and Trustees to help with the running of the organisation.
Please click here if you can support us with your time.

We make a charge for some of our services, but for those that are free to users we rely on grant aid and donations from our supporters. Click here to find out how to make a donation or otherwise help us financially.
